Richier, Ligier

   sculptor
   Born in Dagonville, Ligier (or Léger) Richier traveled to italy around 1515, working later in Lorraine and then finally having to go into exile to switzerland because of his Protestantism. The sculptures he produced, with nature as his inspiration, are at once tragic and profoundly religious, and draw on the late Gothic spirit. His macabre naturalism is seen in the pathetic visages of the Pietà of Étain (1528), or in the Gisant de Philippe de Gueldre (1548), and is fully expressed in the famous Transi de René de Chalon, in the aspect of a nearly skeletal figure offering his heart to God (1544-47). But in the Sépulcre at Saint-Mihiel (1533-64), his tendency to the emotional is tempered somewhat by the influence of formal italian idealism.
